Can You Eat Bread After Its Use-By Date?

🟢 YES — BEST BEFORE IS ABOUT QUALITY

Bread carries a best-before date and is fine after it as long as there's no mould — stale bread is a quality issue (and makes excellent toast). Any visible mould means the whole loaf goes.

Use-by vs best-before — which does this food carry?

Bread carries a best-before date because it stales rather than becomes unsafe. Day-old and older bread is fine toasted or turned into breadcrumbs. The one hard rule: if you can see mould anywhere on the loaf, throw the whole thing away — mould roots spread invisibly through soft bread, so cutting off the green bit doesn't work the way it does for hard cheese.

Common questions

How long after the best-before date can I eat bread?

There's no fixed cut-off — it depends on storage. Days to weeks is common for bread; long-life products can be fine months later. Judge each item by condition, not the calendar.

What signs mean bread should be binned?

Visible mould, an off or sour smell, rancid taste, or pest damage. Any of those overrides everything else.

Why does bread get a best-before rather than a use-by date?

Because it doesn't support the growth of dangerous bacteria — it deteriorates in quality rather than becoming hazardous. Use-by dates are reserved for high-risk perishable foods.

Does proper storage extend it?

Considerably. Kept cool, dry and sealed, bread will hold its quality well past the printed date; stored badly, it can decline before the date.
