Undamaged tins are fine long after their best-before date — the date is about quality. Bin any tin that's bulging, badly dented, rusted through or leaking.
Use-by vs best-before — which does this food carry?
Canning sterilises food and seals it from the outside world, so intact tins stay safe for years past their best-before date — quality (texture, colour) declines slowly, safety doesn't. The exceptions are damaged tins: bulging or swollen ends, deep dents on seams, rust that's penetrated, or leaks can mean the seal has failed, and those tins should be thrown away regardless of date.

Common questions
How long after the best-before date can I eat tinned food?
There's no fixed cut-off — it depends on storage. Days to weeks is common for tinned food; long-life products can be fine months later. Judge each item by condition, not the calendar.
What signs mean tinned food should be binned?
Visible mould, an off or sour smell, rancid taste, or pest damage. Any of those overrides everything else.
Why does tinned food get a best-before rather than a use-by date?
Because it doesn't support the growth of dangerous bacteria — it deteriorates in quality rather than becoming hazardous. Use-by dates are reserved for high-risk perishable foods.
Does proper storage extend it?
Considerably. Kept cool, dry and sealed, tinned food will hold its quality well past the printed date; stored badly, it can decline before the date.
