Prepared Baby Formula Left Out Overnight: Is It Safe?

Never — prepared formula left out overnight must be thrown away. Made-up formula should be used within 2 hours at room temperature, and a feed the baby has started within 1 hour.
Why overnight is too long
Made-up formula is warm, nutrient-rich milk — close to a perfect growth medium for bacteria, and babies are far more vulnerable to food poisoning than adults. NHS guidance: use freshly made formula within 2 hours at room temperature, discard any feed the baby has drunk from within 1 hour, and never save a partially finished bottle. Overnight formula goes down the sink, no exceptions.

Common questions
Can I put the bottle back in the fridge and use it later?
Not once the baby has drunk from it — bacteria from the baby's mouth enter the milk. Unused, freshly made bottles can be cooled and stored at the back of the fridge for up to 24 hours (NHS guidance).
Can I rescue it by re-warming thoroughly?
No — heating formula to bacteria-killing temperatures would destroy nutrients and still not remove any toxins formed. Discard and make fresh.
What's the safest way to make night feeds easier?
The NHS suggests making feeds fresh when needed using water at 70°C+, or safely cooling freshly-made bottles in the fridge (back, not door) for up to 24 hours. Follow current NHS bottle-feeding guidance.
Does this apply to breast milk too?
Expressed breast milk has its own rules — it keeps longer (it has protective antibodies), but overnight at room temperature is still too long. Follow NHS expressed-milk storage guidance.
